Night Guard
Night Guards have been prescribed for years as a good way of protecting the teeth from excessive wear caused by clenching and grinding of teeth. Clenching and Grinding of teeth are typically caused by one of a variety of Bite Problems. A night guard typically does not stop this clenching and grinding of the teeth, it does however, put a layer of protection between the teeth and greatly reduces the amount of force created by the jaw muscles during sleep. This added protection greatly reduces the amount of chipping and wear currently breaking down the teeth. Similar to car tires, night guards wear down with time and typically need replacement every 3-6 years.

While they still are a good, and cost effective, option for the protection of teeth, they do not "fix" the problem. We now can diagnose and most often treat the cause of the problem often eliminating the need for a lifetime of night guard wear. See our section on Bite Problems for more information on long-term treatment options and how we determine how to get there.
